Car Insurance Massachusetts

What is car insurance?

Every driver who gets behind the wheel assumes at least some risk of an accident, and damage to a vehicle can also occur when it’s parked. When something happens (and it likely will eventually), car insurance can give Massachusetts drivers valuable protection.

Car insurance generally provides financial protection if a driver is in an accident. Policies may cover other instances of damage to a vehicle, too.

Who in Massachusetts needs to have auto insurance?

Stat law generally requires drivers on public roads in Massachusetts to carry auto insurance. Coverages in addition to the state’s requirements are broadly recommended.

The basic requirements that the state mandates are fourfold:

  • Property Damage Liability Coverage of $5,000 an accident
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) of $8,000 a person
  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage of $20,000 a person and $40,000 an accident
  • Uninsured Auto Coverage of $20,000 a person and $40,000 and accident

Drivers who have an outstanding lien against their vehicle are usually also required to carry comprehensive coverage, collision coverage and gap coverage. This isn’t a state requirement, but lenders often require these coverages so that the vehicle is insured against damage.

An insurance agent who specializes in auto policies will make sure drivers get all of the coverages they’re required to, and any additional ones that they also deem worth carrying.

What coverages do auto insurance policies make available to drivers?

Auto policies contain multiple insurance coverage options, some of which are standard and others of which are optional. Important coverages to consider are:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Might apply if passengers in the insured vehicle get injured during an accident with another vehicle.
  • Medical Expense Coverage: Might apply if medical passengers’ injuries require medical care, and thus result in medical bills.
  • Bodily Injury Coverage: Might apply if individuals outside the insured vehicle, such as other drivers, passengers, or pedestrians, are injured during an accident.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Might apply if the insured vehicle is damaged in non-collision events, such as a burglary, fire or natural disaster.
  • Collision Coverage: Might apply if the insured vehicle is damaged in an accident, which is usually defined as involving at least one other vehicle.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: Might apply if another person’s property or vehicle is damaged in an accident involving the insured vehicle.
  • Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Might apply if an accident is caused by another driver who lacks adequate auto liability coverage.

Does auto insurance cover hitting a deer?

Hitting a deer, or any other animal, is normally treated as a non-collision event since it doesn’t involve another vehicle. Thus, it generally falls under comprehensive coverage.

If comprehensive coverage is included within an auto policy, then hitting a deer would likely be covered. The event probably wouldn’t be covered if a driver forgoes comprehensive coverage. The same is true for hitting other animals, too.

An insurance agent who specializes in auto policies can help drivers determine whether they should carry comprehensive coverage. The decision often depends upon a vehicle’s value, whether there’s a car lease or loan, the amount the vehicle is driven, and where the vehicle is usually used and stored. These are all considerations that a knowledgeable agent can walk drivers through.

Do insurance companies consider credit scores when determining auto premiums?

Some states allow insurance companies to consider credit scores when calculating premiums for auto policies. Massachusetts doesn’t, though, and was one of the first states to prohibit this practice.
